The production of almonds in the eastern part of Andalusia will suffer a notable decrease, according to UPA Andalusia, which indicates that it handles data that points to losses in the harvest of up to 70% in the interior of the provinces of Almería, Granada and Jaen.

In some areas, even, “the absence of production is being corroborated in the field”, while in others, as much, they will have a 30 percent compared to last season. Mushrooms, especially in organic farming, and the frosts suffered at the beginning of April, with temperatures down to two degrees below zero, have negatively affected plantations.

SEVILLA.- The production of almonds in the eastern part of Andalusia will suffer a notable decrease, according to UPA Andalusia, which indicates that it handles data that points to losses in the harvest of up to 70% in the interior of the provinces of Almería, Granada and Jaen.

In this situation, UPA Andalucía calls on the Administration to strengthen control over the marketing of almonds, above all ecological, to confirm that what is sold as organic is such.

This precaution claimed by UPA Andalucía is due to the price that organic almonds reach in the market, reaching the 8 euros, compared to conventional, what is in 3.

“We want there to be a correct management due to the low production that we will have. Hence, Administrations must be very careful in controlling what is sold to avoid possible problems”, specifies the national head of the Dried Fruit Sector of UPA, Francisca Iglesias.

The almond is a crop that generates wealth in traditional areas of the eastern part of the autonomous community, especially in inland municipalities. It is a very important sector and represents a real alternative, for years, to the olive grove because it generates an important added value in rural areas.
