To mark the centenary of the publication of the first book of the poet Sotomayor 1913, "Mi Terrera", the municipality of Cuevas del Almanzora has organized an event in which a new edition of the book will be presented, publication sponsored by the University of Almería, and the discovery of a bust of the poet conducted by the School of Marble Andalusia in the gazebo that bears his name.
The true value of the work of Sotomayor lies in being the main source document and linguistic value, historical, social, ethnographic, etc.. available to the Almeria region of Valle del Almanzora. Sotomayor wrote aware that his work was the one that held those values and constantly regrets that his countrymen are not able to understand or appreciate, to the point of reaching the conviction that both his person and his work, paradoxically, elicited indifference or, even, contempt.
This work is an ongoing ode to the field values and the people who work, while deep lamentation or elegy to the sufferings, miseries and calamities emanating from both the social circumstances as geography and climate to the peasants looked hopelessly forced to confront change to get the media to his austere and humble existence.
These, also, one of the few writers who genuinely have regional Andalusian lyrics, in the sense of being able to offer a complete picture of the social reality that surrounds the most oppressed classes in their land, and have known it without any baggage symbolist or pompous, simple and true form, unlike some other far more famous and well-known writers who deliberately or not, have contributed their works to popularize so unfortunately widespread image of Andalucía charanga and tambourine that has so harmed and are still harming our land. Sotomayor, we recognize, is free of this guilt.
Sotomayor we can say that is the best historian of the lower basin of the river Almanzora. What happens is that writing a traditional story, but does so with his poetry, protagonists of putting it to ordinary people who devoted their lives to farm work, and does so using its own linguistic modality to tell the little things that make everyday life, what Unamuno called as intra, to transcend to another story, the historians use.
